As part of the preparatory work for the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, which will be held in Mongolia in 2026, a “Consultative Meeting of Development Partners” was jointly organized on April 21, 2025, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Mongolia, and the United Nations Development Programme.

Around 80 officials representing embassies in Mongolia, the United Nations and other international development agencies and organizations, the Office of the President of Mongolia, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Economy and Development participated in the consultative meeting.

The keynote presentations and information shared at the meeting focused on the policies and objectives of the Government of Mongolia regarding the organization of COP17, the scope of cooperation with international development partners, preparations and key issues under the framework of the “International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists,” and other areas of focus.

During the discussion, special emphasis was placed on Mongolia’s proposed “Rangeland Umbrella Initiative,” the establishment of a coalition to ensure policy continuity, the introduction of international best practices related to desertification and land degradation, and the definition of investment and cooperation opportunities.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the COP17 Preparatory Office under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme to collaborate on organizing COP17. Under this agreement, the two sides committed to work together to ensure the effective preparation and organization of the conference, implement sustainable policy initiatives, promote Mongolia’s leading best practices, facilitate knowledge and experience sharing, and support inclusive participation.
